Isolation and Characterization of Macronuclei of Paramecium Caudatum Infected with the Macronucleus-specific Bacterum Holospora Obtusa

چکیده
Endosymbiotic associations between bacteria and eukaryotes are commonly reported (Taylor, 1983). The prokaryotic cell (the cytobiont (Taylor, 1979) or endocytobiont (Schwemmler, 1979)) may live non-specifically within the intracellular habitat provided by the host, but some endosymbiotic bacteria are specialized to invade specific cellular organelles. Three species of the bacterial genus Holospora invade exclusively the nuclei of the ciliate Paramecium caudatum. Like other ciliates P. caudatum contains two different nuclei, the generative, transcriptionally inactive micronucleus and the vegetative, transcriptionally active macronucleus (for a review see Nanney, 1980). Both types of nuclei can be infected by some species of the genus Holospora. Whereas Holospora elegans and H. undulata can only be found in the micronucleus of P. caudatum, H. obtusa is restricted to the macronucleus (for a review see Gortz, 1983). In all Holospora species two morphologically different forms can be distinguished. The long infectious form is taken up from the surrounding medium into a food vacuole and then transported into the nucleus that is specific to the species. Having reached the nucleus the infectious form differentiates by multiple fissions into the smaller reproductive form, which multiplies by binary fission. From the reproductive form the infectious form can then be developed and released into the medium (Ossipov & Podlipaev, 1977; Gortz & Dieckmann, 1980). Normally, the endonuclear bacteria do not destroy the P. caudatum cell. They

Infection and maintenance of Holospora obtusa, a macronucleus-specific bacterium of the ciliate Paramecium caudatum.
The gram-negative bacterium Holospora obtusa is a macronucleus-specific symbiont of the ciliate Paramecium caudatum, which invades the host cell via a food vacuole, infects its macronucleus and grows exclusively in the nucleus. From infection experiments, we showed that a property of the macronucleus that is necessary for it to be recognized and infected by H. obtusa is commonly provided by P. ...
متن کاملInfection of macronuclear anlagen of Paramecium caudatum with the macronucleus-specific symbiont Holospora obtusa.
The gram-negative bacterium Holospora obtusa is an endonuclear symbiont of Paramecium caudatum, which is incorporated into the host cells via the food vacuoles and infects their macronucleus exclusively, but never the micronucleus. Since these two kinds of nuclei originate from a fertilization nucleus, it is assumed that the macronucleus acquires a property necessary for it to be recognized by ...

Holospora spp. and "Candidatus Gortzia infectiva", known as Holospora-like bacteria (HLB), are commonly found as nuclear endosymbionts of ciliates, especially the Paramecium genus. HLB are related by phylogenetic relationships, morphological features, and life-cycles, which involve two alternating morphotypes: reproductive and infectious forms (RF, IF). In this paper we describe a novel species...
متن کاملDraft Genome Sequence of Holospora undulata Strain HU1, a Micronucleus-Specific Symbiont of the Ciliate Paramecium caudatum
Holospora undulata is a micronucleus-specific symbiont of the ciliate Paramecium caudatum. We report here the draft genome sequence of H. undulata strain HU1. This genome information will contribute to the study of symbiosis between H. undulata and the host P. caudatum.

ATING type inheritance in a cililate follows one of two basic patterns (SONNEBORN 1947; BEALE 1954; KIMBALL 1964; NANNEY 1968). In ciliates with genic inheritance mating types are controlled directly by one or more genes. In ciliates with epigenetic inheritance an array of mating type potentialities is controlled by nuclear genes, but which mating type is actually expressed by a given cell is d...
